Windscreen
The area of the windscreen swept by the wipers is inspected for any chips, cracks and other damage. Directly in front of the driver, if the damaged area is more than 10mm it warrants failure, anywhere else in the swept area must be less than 40mm. In addition to this, any sticker or addition to the windscreen such as phone/sat nav holders etc(other that tax disc), is classed as an obstruction of the drivers’ view of the road and therefore warrant failure(although many testers will ask you to remove it rather than fail the car).
Sun visors fitted to the driver's side, which cannot be stowed in the 'off screen' position and which drop down obstructing the view through the swept area of the windscreen are a reason for rejection.

Washers and wipers
These are checked for:
- operation
- extent of area swept by the wipers
- condition of the wiper blades.
- Effectiveness of wipers
Mirrors
Not all mirrors on all vehicles are subject to Test, depending on the age of the vehicle. Those mirrors which must be checked must be
- secure
- visible from the driver's seat
- not distorted or damaged so as to seriously impair the driver's view to the rear
- the drivers side mirror must be present along with either the interior rear view mirror or the passenger side mirror. (N.B if there is no rear window, the interior mirror is deemed useless and therefore the vehicle must have the passenger side mirror.)
